What Is A Roundup Article
The roundup article is a classic tool in the magazine and newspaper writer's toolbox. The writer interviews experts on the topic and get comments, opinions, and information. Once he gathers material from the experts, he writes a roundup of their responses. The roundup article can have a slant when the idea is presented to an editor, or the writer may have the leeway to figure the slant out after he gets the assignment. According to Gary Provost, it depends on the writer's relationship with the editor. He says that the editor may not require a slant if his paper covers several towns because he needs to get pieces done about each one. So, interview experts from different towns in your area. Interview teachers and principles at several schools. Get their opinions and antidotes about the prevalence of violence in schools. Gear several questions around that concept. For example, has violence increased in their school in the last ten years?
If the teachers say yes, get several opinions as to why it has increased. Get comments and antedotes that explain how and why it used to be different. Has a principle or teacher found a way to lessen violence at their school? Has a student group helped to encourage their peers to get along with each other? If some students have started such a group and had success, then your slant would focus on what the students have accomplished. A very basic roundup article is a collection of information or data on a topic. An example is a review describing the newest mirrorless cameras. The writer could flesh out the article by interviewing two or three experts, and using their opinions and comments. This technique can be used for blogging too. If you write a music blog, you could interview local musicians on an idea about music that you think will fascinate your readers. Think about what these musicians have in common and where their opinions and experiences differ. That is your goal to gather opnions and antedotes and fashion them into an interesting article. The roundup article is versatile and a great organizer of your ideas.
